Celebrate Hackney!

A day of debate, discussion, film, arts and culture

Saturday 5 June 2010 from 10.30 - 4pm
Community groups, voluntary organisations, campaigners and artists will be coming together this June in a one day event organised to showcase the diversity of Hackney. The celebration on June 5^th is being planned by the newly launched organisation Hackney Unites.

Part community conference, part local film-festival and arts show-case the event is being held at Stoke Newington Media School and is open to anyone that lives or works in the borough.  

With workshops addressing key issues that affect our communities, children’s activities, dance and performance, the day promises to be a great event for all the family. Hackney Unites secretary John Page commented, ‘If you love Hackney's vibrancy and diversity you will love this event. It is so unique we have even had difficulty naming it.  There will be a range of speakers and debates, there will be fun, with performances from local community groups, there will be food, and there will be massage. There will be performances from a choir, drumming and a dance troupe.’

On display on the day will be the highly acclaimed Changing Lives photographic exhibition (pictured) organized by HCVS, Hackney’s leading voluntary and community sector support agency. The exhibition showcases many of the vibrant community organisations that exist in the borough and the work they are involved in.

Chair of Hackney Unites, Jane Holgate says, ‘While planned as a fun, relaxing and informative day, we also hope that some shared objectives will emerge.
We will be discussing how our communities can continue to work together to address issues of shared concern.’
